Leon
Leon is a colonial city that stands out for its architecture jewels and its important role in Nicaragua's history. This city was the capital of the Province and the independent state of Nicaragua until 1856.
This first city of Leon, built in 1524, was abandoned by its inhabitants in 1610 due to the constant threat of Momotombo volcano. The city was burried by the ashes of the volcano and rediscovered centuries later.The new city of Leon was relocated 30 Km to the west.
One Day Tour
On our way to Leon you will have the chance to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Lake Xolotlan, Momotombo volcano and the Maribios volcanic chain. We will visit the Ruins of Old Leon, declared Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
During our city tour we will visit the Cathedral of Leon, one of the most beautiful temples of the continent and the biggest one in Central America. This temple is the resting place of the remainings of great nicaraguan characters like Ruben Dario, Salomon de la Selva, Alfonso Cortez and Jose de la Cruz Mena. You will also have the chance to visit the Art Centre of Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation and the Ruben Dario Museum, located in the house where the great poet lived during 14 years.
