Somoto's Canyon
Somoto’s Canyon, declared National Monument, is approximately 7 to 12 million years old. The canyon is 4.7 Km long and 3 meters wide with solid stone walls that reach the 250 meter height.
The canyon is the origin site of Central America’s largest river, the Coco or Wangki. Among the fauna of the place you can find otters, hawks, rabbits, deer and butterflies like the Blue Morpho. The flora is composed by orchids, agaves and cacti.
One-day tour
The tour starts in Somoto where our tour guide will be waiting for you to take you to the Canyon. According to the weather conditions there are two tour options:
Option 1 (Dry Season)
We will get to the entrance of the reserve in vehicle and then we will start a 2.5 Km walk until we reach the canyon. We will swim and walk for approximately 2 Km and then will walk again for 2.5 Km. to get to our starting point where we left the vehicle.
Option 2 (Rain Season)
We will get to the entrance of the reserve in vehicle and then we will start a 2.5 Km walk until we reach the canyon. We will swim across the river twice and then we’ll take a boat for 600 m inside the canyon. We will go back, swimming or on the boat. As an option we can appreciate the canyon from a high point to take pictures.
